The design team wanted to create a joyful and nurturing environment for the UCSF Trauma Recovery Center, a state funded pilot program to treat victims of crime with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In order to properly serve patients, many who are victims of rape and assault, it was necessary to create a place for emotional healing and comfort.

The overall design theme focused on bringing color and light into the new 12,000 square foot facility-a much needed improvement over the dark, cramped space that formerly housed the center. Challenged with a limited budget, designers decided to reuse most of the center´s furniture and keep most of the existing walls and doors in place. Skylights were installed to bring natural lighting into the center of the office. Unusual architectural volumes and a full spectrum of color offered a dynamic aesthetic that promotes patient and staff well-being.
